“Are you ready for the next step?”
Gameka and MDEC Level Up your game business.
Taking it to the next level.
Gameka is proud to be a partner in the Level Up Apprentice Program, a collaborative effort between KDU University College and the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation, a government agency launched in 1996 to pioneer the transformation of Malaysia’s digital economy.
The objective of the Level Up Apprentice Program is to provide guidance for future Malaysian game makers. Specifically, the program targets fresh grads and final year students.
Gameka was invited to give a session on running a game business, titled “Running a Game Co., Gameka: Developing Games that Build”. As per the company’s vision of promoting a long term Malaysian video games industry, it was the perfect opportunity to pass on valuable knowledge to the next generation of would-be game makers.
The team sent to KDU consists of CEO Ho J-son, supported by Project Manager Jeffrey Ng, Marketing Communications Narishvin Sukumaran, Game Designer Adam Majid and yours truly, Game Designer/Content Writer Marc Chen.
It started off with an opening session by Adam Majid and I. Adam started off with advice on neglected but valuable skills for the industry, like trend surveying and market studies. After that, I spoke of the hardship of working in a volatile industry in Malaysia. Some of the participants felt it was pretty grim though.
Gameka co-founder Ho J-son then followed up with his presentation. He started with the journey of Gameka. The company started from 6 people in an apartment. Gameka then grew to almost 50 workers within 2 years and winning multiple awards.
Drawing from his years of experience, J-son gave a highly insightful look at the many ways to procure funds for a game business. Finally, a Q&A session ended the presentation with enthusiastic questions from our batch of future game makers.
The Level Up Apprentice Program will no doubt be an important step for Gameka to help MDEC level up local game startups. Here’s to the future of our beloved industry.
